If you're coming from outside the UK, you may want to see the sights. Here are our recommendations of what to see, do, eat, and drink. Listen to Lauren if you want nice ideas, or Joe if you're feeling rogue.
We strongly recommend using Citymapper to help you navigate.
🍔 Places to eat
If you're coming from the US, a "Sunday Roast" is a must. I recommend The Pig and Butcher, or The Smokehouse. Elsewhere, there's Noci and Legare for pasta, Leong's Legends and Tao Tao Ju (try the fried turnip paste) in Chinatown, or The Windmill for pies. Also, Pophams for pastries.
🍸 Places to drink
Swift and Bar Termini do my favourite cocktails in London, while Noble Rot has a great wine selection, great staff, and the ability to easily make 4 hours vanish while you sit in a booth. For coffee, try Omotesando, or for English-style pubs there's The George (Borough), Draper's Arms (Angel) and The Albion (Angel). Locals drink cask ale, which is British for a flat, room temperature beer.
⛰️ Things to do
Liberty, near Soho, is a huge department store that's fun to wander round, but I most definitely recommend a West End show as the tickets are much cheaper than in the US. The Wallace Collection is a lovely, managably sized museum, as is John Soane's Museum - where you basically walk through the house of a hoarder who collected statues in Egypt and Greece. Most museums, including the V&A, Tate, National Portrait Gallery, and British Museum are free.
🍔 Places to eat
L'escargot is a storied French restaurant in Soho. My mum used to go there back when it was famous for breeding snails in the basement! For fish and chips, Fryer's Delight is as authentic as it gets and I recommend the picked eggs. I'm also a big fan of Borough Market, which is near the river, has a great oyster bar, and is a short stroll from the Tate Modern.
🥃 Places to drink
Garlic & Shots might be my favourite place in London. It's a crummy heavy metal dive bar with a menu of 101 shots. If that's too tame for you, try the absinthe bar at The Last Tuesday Society. Finally, The Lamb and The Antelope are our local pubs - choose the former if you want music and odd smells, the latter if you want a nice roast dinner and good, locally brewed beer.
⛰️ Things to do
If the weather is good I like getting out of the city to hike Mole Gap Trail, which ends at a British vineyard. If the weather is bad then Prince Charles' Cinema is a great choice for odd inside events. For museums, I recommend the V&A (normal) or the Wellcome Collection (weird). Finally, there's The Poison Garden for those of you who aren't bothered about surviving until we tie the knot.
